The 2B1 Oka (2Б1 Ока) was a self-propelled gun from Soviet production with a caliber of 420 mm. 2B1 is the designation according to the GRAU index .
In the course of the nuclear armament of the Soviet land forces , a system was required on the tactical level that could fire smaller nuclear explosives. In the 1950s, the US Army already had such a weapon system with the 280 mm M65 cannon . The Soviet Union then stepped up its own development efforts to compensate for this deficit. In 1957 a prototype was finally completed, with which extensive tests were carried out in the following years. It turned out that the Oka system was inadequate in many ways. For example, the rate of fire with one shot per five minutes was too low. The recoil effect when firing affected the entire structure too much. In addition, the transport of the self-propelled gun with its 18 meter long gun turned out to be very laborious. The firing range was 25 to 50 km and the vehicle had a total mass of 55 tons.
Based on this experience and the knowledge that tactical short-range missiles such as the 2K6 Luna system are superior to heavy cannons in this requirement profile, the program was abandoned in 1960.
One example is on display on the outside of the Artillery Museum in St. Petersburg .
