Hopkinsville is a town in the southwest of the US -amerikanischen State of Kentucky . The 2010 census counted 31,577 residents, making Hopkinsville the sixth largest city in Kentucky. The city named after Samuel Hopkins (1753-1819) is the administrative seat of Christian County .
During the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 , Hopkinsville was the city with the longest total duration of 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
history
Hopkinsville was settled in 1796. Bartholomew and Martha Ann Wood, who came from Jonesborough , Tennessee , claimed about five square kilometers of land there due to Bartholomew's service during the Revolutionary War . The successful settlement of the Woods soon attracted more settlers. In 1799 the place was named "Elizabeth" in honor of the Woods' eldest daughter. But since there was already the place Elizabethtown in Hardin County , the place was renamed in 1804 by the Kentucky General Assembly in honor of General Samuel Hopkins from Henderson County .
