Edgar Cayce (born March 18, 1877 in Hopkinsville , Kentucky , USA ; † January 3, 1945 in Virginia Beach , Virginia , USA) was an American medium . He answered questions on topics such as health, astrology , reincarnation, and Atlantis while in a trance . The common term used today for this is channeling or channeling . Cayce was known as the "sleeping prophet" at the end of his life. He initially worked as a bookseller and photographer. His publications in English comprise 300 volumes. Today there are Edgar Cayce Centers in the US and 25 other countries. The headquarters of this movement is the Association for Research and Enlightenment (ARE) in Virginia Beach.

Life

Origin and youth

Family of Edgar Cayce

Edgar Cayce was one of seven children of the farmer Leslie B. Cayce and his wife Carrie.

Cayce wanted to "help" people from an early age. His customers gave him the name, place and date of birth of a sick person and Cayce then lay down on a sofa, put himself into a trance and began with statements that exactly and often surprisingly presented the disease and its causes and then indicated the possibilities for healing . An assistant took note of everything he said while in trance. If the person seeking help died during the trance session, Cayce is said to have said the following at the moment of his death: "I don't see him anymore, he's gone".

Cayce was a very devout person from his youth. Messages under trance that did not fit into his traditional view of religion irritated him when he was pointed out to such discrepancies.

"Parapsychological Diagnostician"

Cayce was called a “prophet”, mystic , seer and clairvoyant during his lifetime . On his business card was the name psychic diagnostician (meaning: " parapsychological diagnostician"). In order to “channel”, ie to receive messages from a “higher level”, he went into a trance state while lying down. He was asked questions from people seeking advice who were not usually in the room. Cayce's early career as a medium was all about health and illness. Later he included answers to questions about past lives and karma . Cayce said he wanted to help those seeking advice with his answers to lead a “better life”. He also called for people to check his statements instead of seeing them as incontrovertible truth. Cayce have also been credited with divination , contact with the deceased, and aura seeing by his followers .

marriage and family

Cayce was married to Gertrude Evans from 1903. They had the children Hugh Lynn Cayce (1907-1982), Milton Porter Cayce (* / † 1911) and Edgar Evans (1918-2013).

Topics and statements

Cayce went into trance an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 times within 43 years between 1901 and 1944; he called his answers readings (readings). Most responses were not recorded until 1923. There are currently around 14,000 readings available. Cayce said he couldn't remember what he said after a trance session. He receives the information about the unconscious, which is not accessible to his consciousness . From 1923 a secretary recorded the readings and Cayce's wife Gertrude Evans chaired the meetings.

Subjects of the records received include:

  • Origin and fate of humanity
“All souls were created in the beginning and are now finding their way back to where they came from.” Cayce believed that souls were created with the awareness of their oneness with God . The earth and its known boundaries were created, in his opinion, as a place for appropriate spiritual growth.
  • reincarnation
Cayce taught the existence of reincarnation and karma, albeit as instruments of a loving God. According to Cayce, the purpose of both of these is that we are taught certain spiritual lessons. He was also of the opinion that humans were never or will never be reborn as animals, since animals, according to him, have “group souls” rather than individuality and consciousness. Cayce also developed a very complex thesis about the organization between God and the souls in order to meet basic needs , in relation to souls that were outwitted by matter and became dependent on it, which according to Cayce was not planned for the living space of the soul. Cayce's theses probably include the theosophical teachings of spiritual evolution .
Cayce believed that our souls, or at least likenesses of our souls, spent time on other planets during their various incarnations . He took this as a reason for the fact that the planets and their position had an influence on a person when he was born.
  • Jesus and Christ
According to the New Spirit Movement , Cayce distinguished between Jesus and Christ . Jesus is a normal soul who incarnated several times (and made many mistakes). Christ is a state that Jesus achieved and that we too should strive for. Because of this, Edgar Cayce often referred to Jesus as our older brother .
  • Unknown life of Jesus
Cayce presented narratives from previous incarnations of Jesus that included a character from Atlantis named Amilius, as well as biblical characters such as Adam , Enoch , Melchizedek , Joshua , Asaf, and Yehoshua . He also described Jesus as an Essene who, in his youth, traveled to India , among other places, to study the religions there.
  • Body Mind and Soul
Cayce often used these three terms or their synonyms to describe the human condition. “ The soul is life. The spirit is the builder. The physique is the result. “This concept has its application not only in wholeness , but also in the spiritual life.
  • meditation
In addition to special meditation techniques , Cayce particularly taught the opening of divine influences. In his volumes, The Search For God , he wrote: “ We speak to God through our prayers . God speaks to us in meditation. “Cayce's concept of meditation contained some aspects from Hinduism and Buddhism , but was more similar to the Christian versions of the New Spirit movement .
  • Extra-sensory perception
Cayce accepted psychic experimentation and extrasensory perception as a natural by-product of soul growth. According to him, God speaks to us in dreams or through intuition . Still, Cayce thought little of spiritualism and channeling . He preferred to promote people who focused their search on Jesus.
In his readings, Cayce claimed that Atlantis existed. He described it as a large continent with advanced technology that was colonized by the first humans on earth about 10 million years ago. His description has a lot in common with the theories of Ignatius Donnelly . According to Cayce, Atlantis society was divided into two factions. So, according to Cayce, there was a good faction called Sons of the Law of One and an evil faction called Sons of Belial . Many people today are reincarnations of souls from Atlantis. He considered himself a reincarnated Egyptian. Cayce also postulated that there was a blue healing stone of Atlantic origin that could be found on an island in the Caribbean .

criticism

Cayce's critics complained that his statements consist mostly of anecdotes and reports and that none of them can be scientifically proven. His advocacy of various forms of alternative medicine , which opponents often referred to as quackery , also met with criticism . His supporters also admit that Cayce sometimes made vague statements and was sometimes completely wrong. His sons Hugh Lynn and Edgar Evans were even the co-editors of a book called Outer Limits of Edgar Cayce's Power , which detailed some of their father's errors.

One of the clearest misstatement was his prediction that in 1933 a "good year" will be as it was not even in the US (although in 1933 the New Deal by Franklin D. Roosevelt was introduced, which gradually brought an improvement with it ). Another prediction said that one day China would be “the cradle of Christianity used in everyday life,” which has not yet been partially confirmed, at least up to now. His supporters point out that Cayce, on the other hand , predicted the Great Depression , a non-communist Russia and the peace of 1945.

Criticism also came from conservative Protestants and Catholics , who resolutely oppose the idea of reincarnation . The church also doubts that people can have supernatural abilities. Cayce's view of history is partially incompatible with today's science. Followers are still trying to obviously market his views today. The headquarters in Virginia Beach is run very authoritarian. In the so-called New Age movement , he has almost the status of a prophet .

Posthumously

Nowadays Cayce and his works are mainly received in the USA and Canada . There are Edgar Cayce Centers in 25 countries . The Association for Research and Enlightenment Inc. (ARE) was founded in 1947. It is headquartered in Virginia Beach , USA.
