Jonesborough is an American city in Washington County , Tennessee . It is the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ).
history
Founded in 1779, 17 years before the state of Tennessee was founded, Jonesborough was initially part of North Carolina and is the first city in Tennessee. The place was named after Willie Jones , a member of the Continental Congress and promoter of the western expansion of North Carolina beyond the Appalachians .
In December 1784 the State of Franklin , named after Benjamin Franklin , was founded in Jonesborough, with Jonesborough as its capital (was replaced by Greeneville). The State of Franklin served as the 14th state until 1788, but was never recognized by Congress and reintegrated into North Carolina.
