Todd Rhodes

Todd Washington Rhodes (born August 31, 1900 in Hopkinsville , Christian County , Kentucky , † June 4, 1965 in Flint , Michigan ) was an American pianist , arranger and bandleader of swing and rhythm and blues .

Todd Rhodes founded an orchestra after graduating in 1922 and then pianist and arranger with Benny Carter , Coleman Hawkins , Fats Waller , Rex Stewart , Doc Cheatham , Don Redman at McKinney's Cotton Pickers in the early 1920s . Rhodes lived and worked after his departure with this formation in the 1930s in Detroit , where he played in the local clubs. In the late 1940s he formed his own formation, Todd Rhodes and His Toddlers , and played rhythm and blues arrangements for the record companies Sensation ( Bell-Boy Boogie ; October 1947) and King Records ( Dance Music That Hits the Spot! , 1959). With the title Blues for the Red Boy he reached number 4 on the R&B charts . He discovered the singer LaVern Baker , who appeared in his orchestra in 1952. Rhodes also accompanied singers Wynonie Harris and Dave Bartholomew on recordings. 1954 ended his contract with King ; in the late 1950s it was forgotten; Rhodes died of untreated diabetes.
