McKinney's Cotton Pickers was an American jazz band founded in 1922 by William McKinney in Springfield, Ohio .

history

The band became known under the direction of Don Redman , who left the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra in 1927 to remain the musical director of the Cotton Pickers until 1931. Under his leadership, the band was next to Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson as the most important pioneer of swing . Members were u. a. such well-known musicians as Benny Carter , Coleman Hawkins , Fats Waller , Roy Eldridge , Doc Cheatham and, for a short time, Sidney De Paris .

The formation only got two hits in the Billboard Top 30 , in December 1928 with "Milenberg Joys" (# 17), which was created in the first studio session in July 1928 (with Cuba Austin , John Nesbitt and Todd Rhodes, among others ), and one number -1 hit with "If I Could Be with You (one Hour Tonight)" under Don Redman in August 1930 for Victor Records . Their last recording was on September 8, 1931, this time under Benny Carter's direction. The band split up in 1934 after a lack of commercial success.

In the 1970s, the New McKinney's Cotton Pickers played the old Redman arrangements, with old band member David Wilson (banjo, vocals) also playing. Founder in 1972 was alto saxophonist David Hutson, and the band was also based in Detroit. From 1972 to 1975 they recorded three albums for Bountiful Records. Other musicians were Ted Buckner (alto saxophone), George Benson (tenor saxophone) and Paul Klinger and Tommy Saunders on the cornet as well as the saxophonist Floyd "Candy" Johnson .
