Cuba Austin
Cuba Austin (* 1906 in Charleston , West Virginia , † 1961 ) was an American jazz - drummer of oldtime jazz and swing .
Austin, who started out as a tap dancer , is best known as a member of McKinney's Cotton Pickers , of which he was a member from 1926. Before that he played in McKinney 's "Synco Jazz Band". McKinney was previously on the drums himself, but then took on more and more management functions. Occasionally he can be heard as a singer on the recordings of the Cotton Pickers. When the Cotton Pickers broke up in 1931, Austin formed one of the two successor bands, the "Original Cotton Pickers", which existed until about 1934. He then moved to Baltimore , where he became a businessman and only occasionally played in the band of the pianist Rivers Chambers. Austin also recorded with Rex Stewart .
Gene Krupa counted Austin, who was one of the first to use hi-hats , to be one of his influences.
