Geevarghese Mar Osthathios
Geevarghese Mar Osthathios (born December 9, 1918 in Mavelikkara , Alappuzha District , Kerala , India ; † February 16, 2012 in Pathanamthitta , Pathanamthitta District , Kerala) was an Indian author and clergyman of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church , who was, among others, from 1975 to 2007 Metropolitan of the Diocese of Niranam was.
Life
After attending school, Mar Osthathios studied theology at Leonard Theological College in Jabalpur and then completed postgraduate studies at Drew University in the USA , which he completed with a Master of Arts (MA). He also completed further studies at Union Seminary in Bangalore . On August 9, 1947, he received the call to Vice-Deacon ( Korooyo ) from Metropolitan Augen Mar Timotheos and then on May 10, 1956, he was ordained a priest . On October 2, 1974, he was appointed Metropolitan and Ramban of St. Mary's Cathedral in Puthencavu .
After the consecration as bishop took place on February 16, 1975 , he was appointed metropolitan of the diocese of Niranam on April 1, 1975 as the successor to Thoma Mar Dionysius . In this capacity he was also a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and lecturer at the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kottayam . In addition, he was President of the Mission Office of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and Director of St Paul's Mission Training Center in Mavelikkara.
In the course of his activity as a metropolitan, which lasted until 2007, he founded numerous aid associations such as the Marriage Assistance Foundation , the Sick Aid Foundation , the Save A Heart Foundation , the House Building Aid Fund , the Mission Training Center , the MGD Ashram Balabhavan Karunagiri , the St Paul's Ashram Puthuppady , the Harippad Mission Center and the Yacharam St Gregorios Balagram .
On January 3, 2007, he was succeeded by Yuhanon Mar Chrysostom as Metropolitan of the Diocese of Niranam.
