Pathanamthitta ( Malayalam : പത്തനംതിട്ട Pattanamtiṭṭa [ ˈpat̪ːənʌmˌt̪iʈːa ]) is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala . At the time of the 2011 census, Pathanamthitta had 37,538 residents. The city is the administrative seat of the Pathanamthitta district .
Pathanamthitta is located in southern Kerala in the hinterland of the Malabar coast . The nearest major cities are Alappuzha 43 kilometers northwest and Kollam 47 kilometers southwest. The pilgrimage site of Sabarimala is 36 kilometers northeast in the Western Ghats . Pathanamthitta is not connected to the rail network; the nearest train station is in Chengannur, 26 kilometers to the northeast.
