Fayette County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Lexington , which was named after the city of the same name in Massachusetts .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of ​​739 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Scott County , Bourbon County , Clark County , Madison County , Jessamine County, and Woodford County .

La Fayette

Fayette County was formed as the original county on May 1, 1780. It was one of the three counties that existed when the State of Kentucky was formed, along with Jefferson Counties and Lincoln Counties. The county comprised the area north and east of the Kentucky River . From it 37 of today's counties emerged and seven more received parts from it. The county's final boundaries were set in 1799. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a supporter in the American War of Independence .

On January 1, 1974, the county council and the City of Lexington formed a consolidated city-county , administered by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government .

Fayette County has three National Historic Landmarks , the Keeneland Race Course , the Old Morrison building of Transylvania University and Ashland , Henry Clay's mansion . A total of 170 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 7, 2017).

Fayette County's population was 260,512 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 12,723 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 108,288 households and 62,915 families. The population density was 354 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.04 percent white, 13.48 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 2.46 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.29 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.90.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 14.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 33.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.3 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,813 , and the median income for a family is $ 53,264. Males had a median income of $ 36,166 versus $ 26,964 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,109. 8.2 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. These included 14.3 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.6 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
