Bell County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Pineville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southeast Kentucky, borders Tennessee to the south, Virginia to the southeast, and has an area of 936 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Clay County , Leslie County , Harlan County , Whitley County, and Knox County .
history
Bell County was formed on February 28, 1867 from parts of Harlan County and Knox County. It was named after Joshua Fry Bell , a lawyer and member of the US Congress . The courthouse was destroyed three times. 1914 and 1918 each by a fire and 1976 by a flood. The stored documents were also destroyed.

As of the 2000 census , Bell County had 30,060 people in 12,004 households and 8,522 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.02 percent white, 2.40 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.83 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.65 percent of the population.
Of the 12,004 households, 31.9 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 15.7 percent were single mothers, 29.0 percent were non-families, 26.8 percent were single households, and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 88.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 19,057 USD , and the median income for a family was 23,818 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,521 versus $ 19,975 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,526. 26.7 percent of families and 31.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 42.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 21.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
