Metcalfe County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Edmonton , named after Edmund P. Rogers , who made the land available for the city's establishment. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southern Kentucky, about 35 km from the state of Tennessee and has an area of 754 square kilometers with no significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hart County , Green County , Adair County , Cumberland County , Monroe County, and Barren Counties .

history

Metcalfe County was formed on February 1, 1850 from parts of Adair County, Barren County, Cumberland County, Green County, and Monroe County. It was named after Thomas Metcalfe , a governor, US senator and member of the US Congress .

Four buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 13, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Metcalfe County had 10,037 people in 4,016 households and 2,883 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.26 percent white, 1.64 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.53 percent of the population.

Of the 4,016 households, 32.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.93.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.6 men.

The median income for a household in the 23,540 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 29,178 USD. Males had a median income of $ 22,430 versus $ 18,591 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,236. 18.8 percent of families and 23.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
