Mercer County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Harrodsburg , which was named after James Harrod , a co-founder of the city. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of 656 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Anderson County , Woodford County , Jessamine County , Garrard County , Boyle County, and Washington County .
history
Mercer County was formed on October 17, 1785 from parts of Lincoln County. It was named after General Hugh Mercer , who died at the Battle of Princeton during the American Revolutionary War .
A Historic District in Mercer County has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Shakertown at Pleasant Hill Historic District , because of its special historical significance . A total of 71 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 12, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Mercer County's population was 20,817. 146 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,423 households and 6,039 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.00 percent white, 3.69 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.63 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.96 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.27 percent of the population.
Of the 8,423 households, 31.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 28.3 percent were non-families, 25.1 percent were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or older, there were 89.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,555 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,121. Males had a median income of $ 33,657 versus $ 22,418 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,972. 10.0 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 17.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
