The county seat is Mayfield , which was named after Mayfield Creek . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

history
Graves County was formed in 1824 from parts of Hickman County. It was named after Major Benjamin Franklin Graves (1771-1813), who was killed in the Battle of Frenchtown in 1813 .
