Menifee County is a county in the US state of Kentucky . The county seat is Frenchburg , named after Judge Richard French . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Kentucky and has an area of 534 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Bath County , Rowan County , Morgan County , Wolfe County , Powell County, and Montgomery Counties .

history

Menifee County was formed on March 10, 1869 from parts of Bath County, Montgomery County, Morgan County, Powell County and Wolfe County. It was named after Richard Hickman Menefee , a member of the US Congress .

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 12, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Menifee County had 6,556 people in 2,537 households and 1,900 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.64 percent white, 1.37 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.11 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,537 households, 32.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, 25.1 percent were non-families, 22.1 percent were single households, and 9.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were 98.1 men statistically.
