Hopkins County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Madisonville , named after President James Madison .

The county is located in western Kentucky, about 70 km to the south from Tennessee , about 50 km to the north from Indiana , and has an area of ​​1,435 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Webster County , McLean County , Muhlenberg County , Christian County, and Caldwell County .

history

Hopkins County was formed on December 9, 1806 from parts of Henderson County. It was named after Samuel Hopkins , a general and member of Congress .

According to the 2000 census , Hopkins County had 46,519 people in 18,820 households and 13,399 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.02 percent white, 6.21 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.86 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
