Laurel County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is London . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Kentucky, is 40 km to the south from Tennessee , 60 km to the southeast from Virginia , and covers an area of 1,149 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jackson County , Clay County , Knox County , Whitley County , McCreary County , Pulaski County, and Rockcastle County .
history
Laurel County was formed on December 12, 1825 from parts of Clay County, Knox County, Rockcastle County and Whitley County. It was named after the Laurel River . At Wildcat Mountain on October 21, 1861, during the Civil War , about 7,000 men fought each other in a battle that the Union troops could win.
A total of nine buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 9, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Laurel County had 52,715 people in 20,353 households and 15,366 families. The population density was 47 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.66 percent white, 0.63 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.55 percent of the population.
Of the 20,353 households, 35.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 21.7 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.8 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,015 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,318 . Males had a median income of $ 27,965 versus $ 19,757 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,165. 17.8 percent of families and 21.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 28.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 20.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
