Monroe County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Tompkinsville , named after Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southern Kentucky, borders the state of Tennessee and has an area of 860 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Barren County , Metcalfe County , Cumberland County, and Allen County .

history

Monroe County was formed on January 19, 1820 from parts of Barren County and Cumberland County. It was named after President James Monroe .

Six buildings in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 19, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had 11,756 people. 131 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,741 households and 3,380 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.57 percent white, 2.76 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.01 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.93 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.45 percent of the population.

Of the 4,741 households, 31.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 28.7 percent were non-families, 26.3 percent were single households, and 12.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.94.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were statistically 91.0 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,356 , and the median income for a family is $ 27,112. Males had a median income of $ 21,820 versus $ 17,783 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,365. 20.0 percent of families and 23.4 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 27.6 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 30.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
