Monroe County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Tompkinsville , named after Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southern Kentucky, borders the state of Tennessee and has an area of ​​860 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Barren County , Metcalfe County , Cumberland County, and Allen County .

history

Monroe County was formed on January 19, 1820 from parts of Barren County and Cumberland County. It was named after President James Monroe .

Six buildings in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 19, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had 11,756 people. 131 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,741 households and 3,380 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer.
