Montgomery County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Mount Sterling .

The county is located in northeastern Kentucky and covers an area of 515 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Bourbon County , Bath County , Menifee County , Powell County, and Clark County .
history
Montgomery County was formed on December 14, 1796 from parts of Clark County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

As of the 2000 census , Montgomery County had 22,554 people in 8,902 households and 6,436 families. The population density was 44 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.07 percent white, 3.48 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,902 households, 33.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, 27.7 percent were non-families, 23.9 percent were single households and 10.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were statistically 91.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,746 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 36,939 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,428 versus $ 20,941 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,701. 12.5 percent of families and 15.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 18.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
