Andrew Graham Beshear (born November 29, 1977 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is an American Democratic Party politician . The attorney was Kentucky’s Attorney General from 2016 to 2019 and ran for governor of that state in 2019 , defeating incumbent Governor Matt Bevin . He replaced it on December 10, 2019.

Family, education and work

He is the son of Steve Beshear , who was governor of Kentucky from 2007 to 2015, and his wife Jane nee. Bell. When the son was born, the then MP had just been elected Attorney General of Kentucky. Andy Beshear grew up with his brother in Lexington and attended Henry Clay High School there .

He began his studies at the private Vanderbilt University in Nashville , Tennessee , where he received a bachelor's degree in political science and anthropology in 2000. He then studied law at the Law School of the University of Virginia , which he graduated with a Juris Doctor in 2003 .

Beshear was admitted to the bar in the Western District of Kentucky in 2003 and in the District of Columbia in 2004 . He is a member of the Louisville Bar Association and the American Bar Association . Beginning in 2003, Beshear spent two years with White & Case , Washington, DC, and then ten years with the Louisville law firm , Stites & Harbison , where his father had worked. Beshear's practice included administrative law, antitrust and environmental law. He has represented a number of companies as a business attorney, but was also named US Consumer Attorney of the Year in 2013 by the online magazine Lawyer Monthly . In 2013 he represented the interests of the joint venture that was planning the “bluegrass” natural gas pipeline. The unmoved pipeline would have run from the northeastern United States through Kentucky to the Gulf Coast . The media discussed the potential conflicts of interest between Beshear's work for commercial clients and his father's work as governor.

Andy Beshear has two children with his wife, Britainy. You live in Louisville . He and his wife are deacons in the Beargrass Christian Church there.

Political career

Beshear first announced a political bid in November 2013 when he ran for the office of Attorney General Kentucky in the 2015 election. His father was still governor at the time, but did not run again in the November 2015 election. While Republican Matt Bevin defeated Democratic candidate Jack Conway to succeed Steve Beshear in governorship, Andy Beshear narrowly prevailed. He received 479,567 votes against the 477,366 votes for Republican Whitney Westerfield, a state senator . Here Beshear took up the broad donor network of his father back and recruited 4.9 million US dollar one, more than any other candidate for this office, while Westerfield collected under 350,000 US dollars.

As Attorney General effective January 4, 2016, Beshear specifically took action against the opioid epidemic in the United States , including nine charges against pharmaceutical companies. Beshear initiated legal proceedings against various measures taken by Governor Bevin's Conservative government. At the end of 2018, he and fifteen attorney general colleagues took legal action against a Texas federal judge who had declared Obamacare unconstitutional. Beshear said 1.3 million Kentucky residents would be affected by a possible abolition of health care reform; it is a matter of "life and death". His first deputy, Tim Longmeyer, was forced to step down after three months in office after an FBI investigation charged him with running a pyramid scheme while Longmeyer was Chief of Staff to Governor Steve Beshear. Beshear had no prior knowledge of the investigation.

On July 9, 2018, Beshear became the first candidate to run for the Democratic nomination for Kentucky gubernatorial election in November 2019 . He prevailed in his party's primary election with 37.9 percent of the vote against his two main rivals, his father's former chief of staff, Adam Edelen , and the parliamentary group chairman in the Kentucky House of Representatives, Rocky Adkins . His running mate was the former teacher Jacqueline Coleman . He has announced that he will make education the focus of his governance work and advocate for teachers' pensions.
