Henderson County was formed from Chickasaw Land on November 7, 1821 . It was named after James Henderson (? –1815), a colonel in the Tennessee militia and quartermaster under Andrew Jackson in the British-American War .
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 17, 2018).

According to the 2010 census , Henderson County had 27,769 people in 10,850 households. The population density was 20.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 10,850 households there were statistically 2.49 people each.
The racial the population was composed of 89.7 percent white, 8.0 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.1 percent of the population.
24 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 61 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15 percent were 65 years or older. 51.8 percent of the population was female.
