history
Weakley County was established on October 21, 1823 after the land was ceded by Chickasaw Indians. It was named after Colonel Robert Weakley , a spokesman for the Tennessee Senate .
Dresden was officially designated and registered for the first time in 1827. The city was named by Mears Warner (1799–1863), who initially came as a commissioner in Weakley County to assess the future settlement and create. Weakley subsequently became one of the first settlers in the city and gave it the name Dresden in memory of his father, a Presbyterian émigré who was born in the German city of Dresden in Saxony .
The land over which the city extends today was originally 56.5 acres, 39 acres of which were donated by John Terrell and 17.5 acres were bought by Simpson Orgon and Ewing Wilson . It was then divided into 90 parcels as well as a centrally located piece for the construction of the district court building. In April 1825, the first public auction for the sale of the town's land was held.
As early as 1843 the city was enlarged and reformed in 1845 and 1869. In 1885, in the course of a superficial attempt to drive the saloons out of the city, the city regulations were overridden. It would take another eleven years before a new city administration was established. Thereafter, the city regulations were amended several times, most recently in 1968 and 1980.
In 1868 the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad completed a railway line through Dresden. Unfortunately, at that time there were already numerous railway stations in the surrounding communities of Gleason , Ralston , Martin and Gardener , which resulted in Dresden turning away from trade and business, whereas the city had previously been the economic center of the entire district. Furthermore, who worked Civil War negative impact on the further urban development.
The red brick courthouse, built in 1854, was destroyed by fire in 1947 and replaced by a new marble building in 1949, which still houses the district court.
The first major business settlements were the Bay Bee Shoe Company in 1948 and the Dresden Manufacturing Company in 1949 .
