Life

origin

He was a member of the noble von der Goltz family . His father Henning Bernhard von der Goltz was a captain , his mother Maria Katharina was born from Heidebreck .

His brother Georg Konrad von der Goltz was promoted to major general in the Prussian army , his brother Balthasar Friedrich von der Goltz to colonel.

Military career

Goltz was sent to Thorn for lessons in 1716 . In 1720 he came to the office in Poznan and in 1722 to the office in Krone , where he familiarized himself with the practice of Polish constitutional law - a job he did not like.

At the beginning of 1724 he therefore joined the Prussian Army and became a Junker in the "Forcade" regiment . In 1726 he went through the empire as a recruiter . Due to his success in doing so, Goltz was promoted to ensign on September 6, 1726 .

In 1752 he became regiment commander and in 1757 major general and chief of the infantry regiment "von Schwerin" . On February 5, 1760 he was promoted to lieutenant general. In March 1760, King Friedrich II wrote to his general: "That is the old Prussian manner of holding oneself against a far more numerous army" . Goltz was able to retreat to Neisse in an orderly manner after Daun was able to defeat the Prussians at Maxen .

In October 1760 he commanded 16 battalions and 35 squadrons to cover the Glogau fortress against the Russians. Then he fought again against Laudon at Landshut .

On April 19, he submitted a plan of attack to the king, which provided for 20,000 men to take offensive action from Glogau against the Russian troops. In addition, he was given the right of life and death by the king in the Hausdorf headquarters . On May 13, 1761, Goltz was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle . In June, however, he fell ill with a heated fever in the fortified camp near Glogau, where he also died. After his death the plan of operations was carried out by General von Ziethen . Another legacy was a Bosniak squadron set up in winter, which became the nucleus for the Prussian Uhlans .

Marriage and offspring

Goltz married Frederike Margaretha von Burgsdorf on July 17, 1737 , widowed von Sack (1713–1773). The couple had eleven children, including Caroline Ernestine (1738–1775), who in 1761 married the Prussian officer, later Lieutenant General Gustav Ludwig von der Marwitz (1730–1797), and Karl Alexander von der Goltz (1739–1818), who became Danish Lieutenant General and Portuguese Field Marshal rose.
