The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) is an art museum in Dayton , Ohio, in the United States of America . Among other things, it is known for its collection of Italian Renaissance art, but today it shows a wide range of objects from art and civilization from the last 5,000 years in permanent and special exhibitions. It is ranked among the leading museums in the United States. In 2007 more than 300,000 visitors visited the museum.
History and construction
In 1919 the forerunner institution, the Dayton Museum of Fine Art , was founded. This was located in a building in downtown Dayton and was then able to move to the newly built Edward B. Green building in 1930 . Two buildings from the Italian Renaissance, the casino, a small, habitable summer house in the gardens of the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola , are the models for the design of the building ; the entrance to the museum is modeled on the stairs of the Villa d'Este near Tivoli near Rome. The museum was renamed the Dayton Art Institute to highlight the growing importance of its museum-affiliated educational institutions.
The building is on the National Register of Historic Places , a list of architecturally significant structures in the United States.
