Bartolomeo Manfredi (* 1582 in Ostiano or Mantua ; † December 12, 1622 in Rome ) was an Italian painter of Mannerism and early Baroque .

Life

Manfredi was trained in Rome, where he was from 1600, and was known there as the first Caravaggio imitator. He was probably his student in his studio and took over after Caravaggio had to leave Rome in 1606 as his successor. He used Caravaggio's light and shadow technique ( Chiaroscuro ) for genre scenes from the military, bandit and pub milieu, but developed his style further. In Rome and the rest of Italy it was quite popular and enjoyed the support of important patrons and collectors outside of Italy, especially after Holland. He also influenced the Utrecht Caravaggists , but painted in a different style.

Between 1610 and 1619 he lived in Rome in the parish of S. Andrea delle Fratte and in 1618 the painter Francesco Guarini is his roommate and servant ( servitore ).

Nicolas Régnier , Gerard Seghers and Valentin de Boulogne are among his students .
