Gerard Seghers (written variant: Geerard Seghers; born March 17, 1591 in Antwerp , † March 18, 1651 in Antwerp) was a Flemish painter .

Live and act

Seghers was a student of Abraham Janssens . After he was appointed master in 1608/09, Seghers went on a study trip to Italy and Spain from 1611 to 1621. He was interested in the Caravaggio School. He studied the works of Caravaggio, Bartolomeo Manfredi , who was 10 years his senior, and Gerard Honthorst in Rome . He then stayed in Spain for a long time before returning to his homeland and using his studies in his works. From 1625 he devoted himself to the work of Peter Paul Rubens , whose style he reveals in his 1630 paintings. He created numerous altarpieces for church institutions in Belgium , Cologne and the Jesuit branches . The interpretation of the Carravggio school can be found in his moral pictures. Many of his works no longer exist or are only handed down in engravings. His son was Jan Baptist Seghers.

There are numerous altarpieces by him in the Belgian churches, some of which betray Rubens' influence . His main work is the Adoration of the Magi (1630, in the Frauenkirche in Bruges ).

His Adoration of the Three Kings in Mexico is in the Mannerist style.

His brother Daniel Seghers was a Flemish still life painter who, in addition to his own works, made copies of the pictures by Rubens and his master student Anthonis van Dyck .
