Valentin de Boulogne
Valentin de Boulogne (born January 3, 1591 in Coulommiers , today in the Seine-et-Marne department , † August 19, 1632 in Rome ; also Jean de Boullongne or Moise Valentin ) was a French painter .
Life
Boulogne was born in Coulommiers and came to Rome around 1617, where he stayed until his death. The style and choice of themes in his works reveal the influence of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio . With Nicolas Régnier, he is considered to be the main representative of the Caravaggio style in the successor to Bartolomeo Manfredi . The best known are Boulognes pub scenes, his soldiers , musicians and fortune tellers. In 1629 he was awarded the privilege of painting “The Martyrdom of Saints Processus and Martinian” in St. Peter's Basilica . Cardinal Francesco Barberini was one of his sponsors .
