The Copa América 2021 was the 47th game of the South American continental championship in football. It was organized by CONMEBOL and took place in Brazil from June 13th to July 10th, 2021 . Brazil hosted the Copa America for the sixth time . The winner was the Argentine national soccer team , which defeated Brazil 1-0 in the final and thus ended a negative series of 28 years without major international titles. In the meantime, they lost in three Copa finals ( 2007 , 2015 , 2016 ) and one World Cup final ( 2014 ).

The Copa America, originally planned for 2020, has been postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The tournament was to take place for the first time with Argentina and Colombia in two countries. In May 2021, a few weeks before the start of the tournament, Colombia and Argentina were eliminated one after the other as host nations and Brazil stepped in as the new host.

Allocation and relocation of the tournament and change of hosts

On April 9, 2019, CONMEBOL announced at a conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil , that the tournament would take place in Argentina and Colombia. Argentina hosted the tournament nine times before. For Colombia it would have been the second edition of the Copa America since 2001 .

The championship was originally scheduled for 2020. With this issue, the host of the tournament was to just-year figures in the rhythm be changed from four years ago and, at the request of the South American federation CONMEBOL, to the rhythm of European football are equalized.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , CONMEBOL decided on March 17, 2020 to postpone it by one year.

In mid-May 2021, amid the "third wave" of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing social unrest in the country (although the latter was not officially mentioned), the Colombian government asked for a possible postponement of the tournament to November. With reference to the existing worldwide dates of the league - fixtures and international competitions, CONMEBOL ruled out a postponement and decided to announce new venues as soon as possible. At the same time, however, the health emergency in Argentina was no better; The country was in the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic and was once again in strict lockdown to control the spread of the virus.

On May 30, 2021, Argentina was also suspended due to the rapidly increasing number of COVID-19 cases. There was no host two weeks before the start of the tournament. After the end of Colombia, Chile was brought into play as a possible venue. In fact, on May 31st, Brazil was chosen as the new host. In the short-term award of the tournament to Brazil, the political calculations of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro , who is criticized for his corona policy, among other things, played a role.

Attendees

In addition to ten South American teams, two visiting teams from outside South America were originally supposed to take part in the tournament. On June 13, 2019, the last two winners of the Asian Cup , Australia ( 2015 ) and Qatar ( 2019 ), were confirmed as visiting teams. At the end of February, however, both teams had to cancel their participation in the continental tournament, as the schedule collided with the Asian World Cup qualifiers due to the postponement of the tournament .
