The province is one of the driest in the country.

Santiago del Estero is located in a fertile area on the Río Dulce at 162 meters above sea level.

The river is bridged by the Puente Carretero in the north, the 750 m downstream railway bridge built between 2013 and 2018 for the tren urbano de Santiago del Estero and another 1300 m downstream by the 4-lane Puente San Francisco Solano .

history

Santiago del Estero was re-founded in 1553 by the conquistador Francisco de Aguirre with settlers from Chile on the site of a city that had already been founded under a different name in 1550 , making it the oldest city in Argentina that has existed continuously to this day. For this reason it is also known as the Madre de Ciudades (mother of all cities).

At the end of the 19th century, the city had 8,000 inhabitants. Today only a few buildings from the colonial era are preserved.

Culture

The cultural life in Santiago is characterized by the multi-ethnic mix of the ancestors of today's inhabitants. The most strikingly represented are descendants from Italy and the Arab-Asian region. This is particularly noticeable in the many different restaurants.

The city's two large universities (one of which is private) are also characteristic, which means that there are a lot of young people in the city. A youth scene of its own has developed on the streets and in the city park, and there is a selection of clubs and discos. Santiago del Estero is characterized by social differences. The unemployment rate in some city districts is 70%.

A free art scene is most likely to be found in music, although it is very folkloric here, and on stage. In addition to performances in the city theater, socially critical and highly political plays are usually performed in a church setting.

Santiago is the seat of the diocese of Santiago del Estero . The episcopal church is the Nuestra Señora del Carmen Cathedral .

The Estadio Victor Antonio Aguirre is the city's football stadium and home to Club Atlético Central Córdoba .
