Talavera de la Reina is a Spanish city in the province of Toledo in the west of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha . The on the north bank of the Tagus located city has 83,417 inhabitants and is ahead of Toledo the most populous city in the province of Toledo ( INE , at January 1, 2019).
location
Located in the valley of the Tagus west of Madrid below the Sierra de San Vicente at the tributary of the Alberche . Neighboring towns in the north are Mejorada, Segurilla , Cervera de los Montes, Navamorcuende and Pepino; in the northeast Seranillos Playa and Cazalegas, in the east Lucillos and Montearagón; in the southeast La Pueblanueva, in the south Las Herencias and San Bartolomé de las Abiertas; in the south-west Calera y Chozas and in the north-west Velada. It is about 120 km to Madrid .

history
181 BC The place in which there are many remains of pre-Roman settlement was conquered by Quintus Fulvius Flaccus for the Roman Empire. It was called Caesarobriga. The traces of the Moorish siege can still be seen on the city wall . In the 11th century, Alfonso VI conquered . of Castile and León the city.
On July 27 and 28, 1809, a British-Spanish and a French army fought in the Battle of Talavera . As a reminder of the defeat of Napoleon , a villa in Würzburg with the surrounding Talavera square , now a large festival area, was named. The Kiliani festival takes place there every year in July . There is otherwise no connection to the Spanish city.
During the Spanish Civil War there was the battle of Talavera de la Reina around the city in 1936 to defend Madrid against the advancing insurgent troops of Franco.
economy
Talavera de la Reina is a trading and processing center in an agricultural area. Important branches of the economy are the textile industry, mechanical engineering and food production (e.g. cooking oil). The city is known for its handicrafts, especially for embroidery and the world-famous Talavera ceramics, which are highly valued for their high quality and artistic value.
Attractions
The Ruiz de Luna Museum has numerous works from the 15th to 18th centuries, including the famous azulejos (tiles). There are also many great buildings to see: the Gothic church of Santa María la Mayor ( Mudejar style ), originally built in 1194; the Virgen del Prado hermitage from the 11th century with its ceramic tiles inside; the Iglesia de Santiago el Nuevo, an excellent example of Mudejar architecture from the 14th century; and the Monastery of San Benito . The Tajo Bridge from the 15th century, consisting of 35 arches, is also famous.
