Due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms, the population of the municipality has declined sharply since the middle of the 20th century. The hamlet (pedanía) Los Alares , which has long been incorporated, also belongs to the municipality .

economy

Originally the place was probably only a summer pasture for the cattle of the villages further down the valley (see also: transhumance ). Today the area around Los Navalucillos is mainly agricultural, characterized by olive growing ; but other fruit trees were also planted. For centuries, the population lived largely on a self-sufficient basis , because sales (e.g. of cheese, sausage and ham) on the regional markets were difficult because of the great distances. Today tourism within Spain also plays a certain role in the income of the municipality.

history

Very few prehistoric , Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and Moorish finds have been made, which may have to be attributed to the altitude of the region. In 1085 the area was named by Alfonso VI. Recaptured from the hands of the Moors ( reconquista ) , but shortly afterwards threatened again by the Berber Almoravids . It was not until Alfonso VII (reigned 1126–1157) that the La Mancha region finally became Christian around 1130. The first mention of the place name Naualuciellos comes from a document from the year 1209.

The brick outer skin interspersed with quarry stone fields indicates clear influences from the Mudéjar style . The bell tower (campanario) , built entirely of bricks, has been topped with a statue of Christ since the beginning of the 20th century . The eye-catcher in the interior of the church, which is covered by a wooden ceiling, is the late Baroque altarpiece in the central apse in the style of Churriguerism . At Lisbon earthquake (1755), the church was damaged, but rebuilt subsequently modernized.
  • The Ermita de Nuestra Señora la Virgen de las Saleras was built in the 17th century, but it too had to be repaired after the earthquake of 1755.
