economy
The area around Huecas was and is mainly agricultural (wheat), with wine and olive growing to a small extent ; the place itself served as a craft and mercantile center for the surrounding villages.
history
Although very few prehistoric , Roman , Visigoth and Moorish finds have been made, the presence of settlers and soldiers in the region is probable and evidenced by the discovery of a Roman manor ( villa rustica ) . In 1085 the area was named by Alfonso VI. Recaptured from the hands of the Moors ( reconquista ) , but shortly afterwards threatened again by the Berber Almoravids . It was not until Alfonso VII (reigned 1126–1157) that the La Mancha region finally became Christian around 1130. The oldest mentions of the place name Waqqas or Occas come from the 11th and 12th centuries. During this time Huecas was on the pilgrimage route from the Levant ( Valencia ) via Avila and Salamanca and on to Santiago de Compostela . In the 16th century, the place received city rights (villa) with its own jurisdiction.
