history

The village was an important communication hub in the times of the Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. Because of its location above the Tajo Valley, the place was always expanded with fortifications by the respective rulers.

Santa Cruz was a base of the Military Order of St. Jacob until 1175, when an encomienda was set up after confirmation from Pope Alexander III .

Because of its increasing importance, it became the capital of the "encomienda" in 1242, under the "maestrazgo" of Rodrigo Iñiguez.

In 1253 the order leader Pelay Perez Correa signed the charter of the town.
