Consuegra is a municipality with 9998 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Spanish province of Toledo and the geographical region of Mancha . The A4 motorway, which runs from Madrid to Andalusia , passes Consuegra to the east. Consuegra has an area of ​​364 km² and is located on the Amarguillo River, which, however, has no water in summer.

history

On the hill south of Consuegra, Calderico settled in the 6th century BC. The Iberians because of its strategic location for transhumance .

From the Second Punic War , the Calderico hill was conquered by the Romans and the Roman city Consaburum was founded at the foot of the hill and the settlement on the hill was abandoned. The Roman Consuegra developed into the most important city in the province of Carpetania and was an important station on the north-south axis. Bridges, roads, a dam and an aqueduct were built . Consuegra is mentioned in the works of the Roman writers Titus Livius and Ptolemy .

When the Arabs “arrived”, the majority of the Hispanic and Gothic population remained in the village. The castle dates from this time. After the Reconquista (German. Recapture ) of Toledo in 1085 by Alfonso VI. from Leon Consuegra came under Castilian rule. In 1097 Diego, son of Cid , was killed in the battle of Consuegra . In this battle, the Castilian army was defeated by the Almoravids under the command of Yusuf ben Taxfin , with Consuegra temporarily coming back under Arab rule.

In 1150 Alfonso VII gave the castle to his vassal Rodrigo Rodríguez. 1183 the population of Consuegra under Alfonso VIII. With the approval of Pope Lucius III. the Order of Knights of St. John entrusted the Consuegra to the capital of the Grand Priory Mancha and the castle rose to his seat. Under leadership, the situation in the area finally stabilized, whereupon Consuegra was repopulated and the place became an official seat of the royal administration. During the secularization in the 19th century, the Order of St. John had to leave the place and cede its property.

On September 11, 1891, Consuegra was destroyed by the floods of the Amarguillo River, whereupon the current urban structure of the place was created and the Roman bridges also disappeared.

  • The castle of Consuegra was probably built during the first stages of the Reconquista. Under Alfonso VIII it was assigned to the Order of St. John , who set up the seat of the La Mancha priory and expanded the castle, which received a double curtain wall, four fortress towers and an outer wall passage. In 1813, during the Spanish War of Liberation , the castle was destroyed. The ruins, which came into private hands due to the expropriation of the Johanniter during the secularization in 1836, became the property of the city in 1962, whereupon the fortification of the castle began. When the building school was founded in 1985, the renovation work, which is still going on today, received a major boost.
  • The windmills of Consuegra , together with the castle, which is also on the Calderico hill, are the landmark of Consuegra and date from the 16th century . Eleven of the original 13 mills have been preserved. In the mill Bolero (where the tourist office is located) the millstone for wheat flour and in the mill Sancho the entire grinding mechanism are preserved. It is put into operation at the Saffron Festival . The Cardeño Mill used to be inhabited. In the Caballero del Verde Gabán (Knight in the Green Cloak) mill there are numerous editions of Don Quixote de la Mancha . There is an exhibition on wine in the Rucio mill . The Espartero mill contains an exhibition of handicrafts in Toledo and Clavileño, photos and furniture from Andorra .
  • The Church of San Juan Bautista was built in 1567 in the Mudejar style on the plan of a Latin cross . It has a square pendant and arched entrances on the side. Their masonry consists of natural stone and brick.
  • The church of Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz was built in over 50 years from 1803 in neo-classical and neo-baroque style and has a facade made of white marble.
  • The town hall is built in the Renaissance style and is located in the Plaza Mayor. This is surrounded by houses, some of which contain galleries from the 17th century.

Festivals

Important festivals are the Batalla medieval (medieval battle) on August 15, which commemorates the battle of 1097 and where u. a. the battle is depicted on a giant chessboard, the feast of the Virgen Blanca (dt. Feast of the White Madonna ) on September 8th, the feast of Christ of the True Cross , the patron saint of the city, which takes place from September 20th to 25th, as well the saffron festival (Fiesta del Azafrán) on the last weekend of October, when a dulzinea is chosen from among the young women and the Sancho windmill is put into operation.

Most of the jobs are in agriculture with the cultivation of grain, wine and olives, as well as some farms with intensive livestock farming. There is also textile production and wood processing. The service sector is mainly based on tourism, catering and trade.
