Alfons , also Alphons , is a male given name. The female form is Alfonsa or Alphonsa .

Origin and meaning

The original meaning of Alfons is uncertain.

It is possible that the name is composed of the Old High German adal (noble) or al (whole) and funs (ready). But it could also be a form of the old Germanic name Hildefons , which means “ready for battle” ( hild “fight”, funs “ready”).

In the course of the Great Migration, the name spread in the Romance-speaking areas: Catalan also Alfons , French Alphonse , Italian Alfonso , Spanish Alfonso and Alonso and Portuguese Afonso . On the Iberian Peninsula, princes often bore this name.
