Alfons
Alfons , also Alphons , is a male given name. The female form is Alfonsa or Alphonsa .
Origin and meaning
The original meaning of Alfons is uncertain.
It is possible that the name is composed of the Old High German adal (noble) or al (whole) and funs (ready). But it could also be a form of the old Germanic name Hildefons , which means “ready for battle” ( hild “fight”, funs “ready”).
In the course of the Great Migration, the name spread in the Romance-speaking areas: Catalan also Alfons , French Alphonse , Italian Alfonso , Spanish Alfonso and Alonso and Portuguese Afonso . On the Iberian Peninsula, princes often bore this name. In the German-speaking countries, the name only became popular again through the veneration of St. Alfons Maria de Liguori , an Italian Redemptorist from the 18th century.
Connotation in some languages
Probably going back to the drama Monsieur Alphonse (1873) by Alexandre Dumas the Elder. J. the name Alfons is used in some languages as a more or less cryptic name for a pimp . For example in Danish . Pimping is also referred to here as "alfonseri". Perhaps that is why there were only seven bearers of the name in all of Denmark in 2006. Also in Polish and Norwegian has Alfons the connotation pimp .
