Alfons Würzl

Alfons Würzl (born March 9, 1941 in Vienna ; † April 5, 2016 ) was an Austrian jazz musician ( clarinet , soprano saxophone ).

Life

In the early 1960s, Würzl played in the Real Jazz Trio , which also included Walter Terharen (piano) and Horst Bichler (drums) (“Wolverine Blues”, Amadeo, 1963). From 1961 he was (with interruptions) a member of the Barrelhouse Jazz Band Vienna , for which he also arranged (“Today d'Engerl are on vacation in Vienna”); He also took part in the band's recordings with Max Kaminsky ( Philips 1973) and Bud Freeman / Bill Grah ( Bud's Birthday , Philips 1975) and the Vienna Original Storyville Jazzband . In 1989 the recording of Fischer Brau Jazz Live was made , which Alfons Würzl made with his quartet of Humbert Augustynowicz (keyboards), Bernhard Gottlieb (bass) and Horst Bichler. Since 1972 he has performed with a number of great names in classical jazz in Vienna's Jazzland : u. a. with Jimmy McPartland , Eddie Miller , Dick Wellstood , Art Hodes , Ralph Sutton , Ed Polcer , Randy Sandke , Bob Wilber , Kenny Davern , Warren Vaché , Allan Vaché , Peanuts Hucko , Dick Cary , Teddy Wilson , Beryl Bryden , George Masso , Jim Galloway , Doc Cheatham , Romano Mussolini , Günter Boas , Ken Peplowski , Red Richards , Howard Alden , John Allred and many others. In the field of jazz he was involved in seven recording sessions between 1963 and 1989. He died in April 2016 at the age of 75.
