Alfons Deissler

Alfons Deissler (born April 2, 1914 in Weitenung near Bühl (Baden) ; † May 10, 2005 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Catholic German theologian ( Old Testament scholar ).

life and work

Deissler studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the University of Freiburg , he received his doctorate in 1938 with the thesis "Prince Abbot Martin Gerbert von St. Blasien and the theological method." Ordained a priest in 1939, he studied from 1948 to 1950 in Paris at the Institut Catholique and at the Sorbonne . He completed his habilitation in 1951 with the thesis "Psalm 119 (118) and his theology." From 1951 to 1982 he held the chair for Old Testament theology and exegesis at the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Freiburg. Among his students is the Erfurt Old Testament scholar Joseph Reindl .

Alfons Deissler is considered one of the leading Catholic scholars of the 20th century. His exact historical-critical work with a spiritual depth had a broad public impact, especially his work: "The Basic Message of the Old Testament - A Theological Perspective" (1972) and his three-volume exposition of the Psalms (1963/64). He belonged to the group of translators of the Old Testament in the standard translation . In the 1980s he published a commentary on the 12 (minor) prophets in the series “The New Real Bible” .
