Alfons A. Nehring

Alfons A. Nehring (born August 12, 1890 in Jelcz-Laskowice (Biskupice Oławskie (Bischwitz)); † December 9, 1967 in Würzburg ) was a German linguist.

Career

Alfons A. Nehring studied philology at the University of Breslau and Berlin . In 1915 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. and in 1923 his habilitation . Before 1923–1930 he was a member of the philological faculty of the University of Wroclaw. From 1930 to 1933 he held a professorship for comparative linguistics at the University of Würzburg . After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he was forced to resign for racist reasons.

emigration

He was able to emigrate to the USA, where he taught at Marquette University in Milwaukee from 1938 to 1943 . He then received a call from Fordham University from 1943 to 1952 . In New York he was a founding member of the Council for a Democratic Germany .

return

In 1952 he returned to Germany, where he again worked as a professor of comparative linguistics at the University of Würzburg. There he was rector from 1953 to 1955. In 1958 he retired.
