Alphons Egli (born October 8, 1924 in Lucerne ; † August 5, 2016 there ; entitled to live in Entlebuch and Lucerne) was a Swiss politician ( CVP ). As Federal Councilor , he was Minister of the Interior and once held the office of Federal President .

Life

Gotthard Egli , the son of the Lucerne government councilor and councilor of states, studied law at the University of Zurich , the Pontifical Gregorian University and the University of Bern and graduated in 1949 with a doctorate. From 1952 to 1982 he worked as an independent lawyer and notary .

In 1963 he was elected to the Grand Citizens' Council of the City of Lucerne and held this office until 1967. In 1967 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Lucerne and spent eight years of his political career there. In 1971 he ran unsuccessfully for the National Council , from 1975 he was a member of the Council of States .

On December 8, 1982 Egli was elected to the Federal Council. He headed the Federal Department of Home Affairs . By making the burgeoning environmental protection a topic as a declared conservative after the Chernobyl catastrophe and the major fire in Schweizerhalle , he gave these concerns political legitimacy: In connection with the dying forests , he implemented measures to keep the air clean . He was Federal President in 1986.

As Federal President, on June 3, 1986, he officially apologized for the injustice inflicted on the Yeniche in Switzerland and, after his resignation, headed a fund commission which compensated Yeniche affected by kidnappings, hospital admissions, etc. with sums of between 2,000 and 7,000 francs.

Egli resigned from the Federal Council on December 31, 1986 for health reasons. He was a former lord of the Swiss Student Union and the Semper Fidelis Lucerne , Agaunia St. Maurice and Burgundia Bern sections .

He died on August 5, 2016 in an old people's home in Lucerne.

After his death it became known that he had been an active member and officer (most recently lieutenant colonel ) of Army Staff Section 420.3 from 1971 until his election to the Council of States in 1975, under the code name "Blasius" . As a special service, this had the task of preparing the resistance in Switzerland in the event of a communist occupation. At that time, Egli made a significant contribution to the development of the predecessor organization of the Swiss resistance organization P-26 .
