El Toboso is a small town and a municipality in central Spain ( municipio ) with 1,764 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Toledo in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha . The town became world-famous through the literary figure of Dulcinea from Miguel de Cervantes ' famous novel Don Quixote .

Location and climate

The small town of El Toboso is located in the gently undulating landscape of La Mancha about 115 km (driving distance) southeast of the city of Toledo at an altitude of about 635  m ; to Madrid it is almost 140 km in a north-westerly direction. The climate in winter is harsh, but in summer it is dry and warm; the sparse rain (approx. 425 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter months.

The mechanization of agriculture , which has been increasing since the 1950s, and the abandonment of small farms led to a decline in purchasing power and the emigration of part of the population in the small town as well.

economy

The area around El Toboso was and is essentially agricultural, with viticulture playing the dominant role today; the city itself served as a craft and mercantile center for the surrounding villages. Day tourism has been of greater importance since the 1960s.

history

Although no traces of a Celtic , Roman , Visigothic or Moorish settlement were made, small finds were made. In 1085 the area was named by Alfonso VI. recaptured ( reconquista ) and repopulated ( repoblación ) by Christians from the north and south of the Iberian Peninsula . The first mention of the place name comes from the 14th century; in 1390 the place received free market rights . In the 15th century it belonged to the Order of Santiago and was granted city rights (villa) , but by the time of Cervantes the place had sunk into insignificance.

Attractions

El Toboso - main square with town hall and San Antonio Abad church
  • The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad is dedicated to the early Christian hermit Anthony the Great . It was built in 1525 on the site of a previous medieval building, the stones of which were partially reused as spoil in the new building. The hall church covered by an elaborate rib vault has three aisles and is therefore sometimes referred to as the "Cathedral of La Mancha". The vault ribs grow out of the round pillars without intermediate capitals - a typical feature of the period around 1500.
  • The immediately adjacent Town Hall (ayuntamiento) is an out break - and bricks erbauter building of the 19th century.
  • A modern monument to Dulcinea and Don Quixote stands at a suitable distance from the church .
  • The Monasterio de las trinitarias de El Toboso , built in the strict Herrera style of the 17th century, belonged to the female branch of the Trinitarian order .
  • The Museo Cervantino deals with the worldwide reception history of Don Quixote .
  • The Museo-Casa de Dulcinea del Toboso , set up in a side street in the alleged birthplace of Dulcinea , shows exhibits from everyday life in the region.
Surroundings
  • The Ermita de Santa Ana is the ruin of a late medieval hermitage.
