economy
Guadamur was the agricultural center of several smaller communities, hamlets and farmsteads. With the exception of around 90 hectares of irrigated arable land on which melons and vegetables grow, in the Toledo region - as elsewhere in the center and south of Spain - exclusively dry fields are practiced. Above all, cereals, olives and wine are grown or planted. In the 18th century there were two mines in the area - one for the extraction of lead ores , the other for the extraction of coal .
history
Traces of Bronze Age and Celtiberian settlements have been found in the vicinity of the place . In Roman antiquity the area was mainly a trade route from south to north and from east to west; Traces of Roman estates ( villae ) were not discovered. The Visigoths established an important settlement in Guarrazar , today's suburb, which was taken over and continued by the Muslim conquerors after 711, but which - apart from a few place names and unlike in Toledo, which is only a short distance away - left hardly any archaeological traces. On the way to the victorious battle of Las Navas de Tolosa , the Christian armies marched through the area in 1212, which was subsequently secured by the construction of castles and watchtowers. On the ruins of one of the early fortifications, the imposing Castillo was built in the 15th century , which has survived the passage of time.
Attractions
- The main attraction of the place is the late medieval castle Guadamur ( castillo ), which is a good kilometer east of the place.
- The hermit church ( ermita ) Nuestra Señora de la Natividad near the castle originally dates from the 13th century. Its masonry consists of several layers of quarry stone , between which there is a layer of bricks at intervals of about 40 cm . The single nave interior was vaulted only in the 19th century. From the ceiling of the apse hang copies of the Visigoth consecration crowns found in the years 1858–1861 not far from here in the suburb of Guarrazar , the originals of which can be seen in the Archaeological Museum in Madrid .
- A Centro de Interpretatión del tesoro de Guarrazar was set up in an old school building , which is primarily aimed at young visitors.
- The parish church of Santa María Magdalena was originally a single-nave building from the 16th century, which was given a north aisle in 1702. The current three-aisled condition was only brought about by extensions and conversions at the beginning of the 20th century.
- A late Gothic court column ( rollo jurisdiccional or picota ) from the years 1468–1471 is nearby.
- The Ermita San Antón also dates from the 16th century and now houses a small ethnographic museum on the living conditions of earlier times and on folk art and costumes in the region of the Montes de Toledo .
