history

In 507 the Battle of Vouillé ( Proelium Vogladense ) is said to have taken place here, in which the Frankish King Clovis defeated the Visigoths .

However, it is also believed that the site of the battle was not Vouillé, but Voulon . While Vouillé is about 15 km northwest of Poitiers, Voulon is about 16 km south of Poitiers.

The distance from the battlefield of Poitiers is given by Gregory of Tours as 10 miles (" in campo Vogladense decimo ab urbe Pictava miliario ").

In 1831 a stone meteorite weighing around 20 kilograms fell near Vouillé and was classified as L6 chondrite .
