Vivonne is a French municipality with 4345 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Vivonne belongs to the arrondissement of Poitiers and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton Vivonne . The inhabitants are called Vivonnois (es) .
geography
Vivonne lies on the Clain River , into which the Vonne flows here and the Clouère a little north of the village . Vivonne is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Marçay in the north and northwest, Iteuil in the north, Aslonnes in the east and northeast, Château-Larcher in the east, Marnay in the southeast, Voulon in the south and southeast, Payré in the south, Celle-Lévescault in the southwest and Marigny- Chemerau in the west.
Route nationale 10 , the former route nationale 742 and the Paris – Bordeaux railway line run through the municipality .
history
In 507, the Battle of Vouillé between the Franks and Visigoths probably took place near Vivonne (then Vivône), but mainly in the municipality of neighboring Voulon . In the Middle Ages, the Lusignan family became rulers of Vivonne.
Vivonne was destroyed early by air strikes during World War II.
