The E-Werk Wacht is a small hydropower plant on the Prägbach in the Präg district of Todtnau . In a normal “water year”, the system produces 350,000 kWh, which is roughly equivalent to the needs of 100 households.

history

In 1921, the municipality of Bernau in the Black Forest and Holzwarenwerke Präg GmbH submitted the application to build a hydropower plant on the Upper Prägbach. The Badisches Bezirksamt issued the permit on April 11, 1922. On December 6, 1928, the Baden District Office approved the application for a 30 cm increase in the dam. On April 1, 1930, the community took over the shares in Holzwarenwerke Präg and became the owner of the entire system: dam with weir, slope pipe , water lock , pressure pipe , turbine house with mechanical equipment and overhead line . The reservoir is designed as a daily compensation pond with a usable pool volume of 12,365 m³. The weir is located at a narrow point in the upper Prägbach valley - around 12 meters long. In the dam there is the computer system and a bottom outlet , which can also be used as a flood protection.

At that time, the system supplied the residents of the communities of Bernau in the Black Forest, Präg and Herrenschwand with electrical energy. To ensure a permanent power supply, a diesel engine was also installed, which was removed again in 1956 after being connected to the public supply network. In 1983, major investments were made and an additional powerful Pelton turbine (WKV) was installed, and a control line was laid to the reservoir. With effect from January 1, 2011, the municipality of Bernau sold the hydropower plant with all its components to E-Werk Wacht Baur OHG.

Service and consumer of the generated electrical energy

The two-nozzle Pelton turbine made by Voith and the AEG generator from 1922 are still functional. The WKV turbine with generator installed in 1984 is in continuous operation. The installed power of both machines is 290 kW. The water supply lines are designed as steel pipes from 1929 and currently allow a maximum hourly output of 90 kW.

The electrical energy is delivered to the EOW (energy supply upper Wiesental). In addition, according to the rules of the Renewable Energy Sources Act, it is fed into the public network. The responsible network operator is ED Netze GmbH, Rheinfelden .

Location / location

The hydropower plant is located in the north-eastern part of the district boundary of Todtnau and its suburbs and borders the Herzogenhorn area. Due to the variety of natural features and extensively used pasture fields, as well as near-natural forests and rare plants, the area was included in the 2,867-hectare nature reserve Gletscherkessel Präg .
