history

In 1080 the place was first given the Latin name fons Comitis ( Fontaine du Comte , German: Grafenbrunnen). William X. of Aquitaine , Count of Poitiers, Duke of Aquitaine, donated the area to the Archbishop of Bordeaux so that the Cistercians could found an abbey here. The abbey was destroyed in the war of religion (the Huguenot Wars). More recently, at least since the end of the 20th century, Fontaine-le-Comte has developed into the banlieue of Poitiers.
