economy

The area around Santa Cruz del Retamar was and is essentially agricultural, with viticulture and larger olive tree plantations playing important roles; the small town itself served as a craft and mercantile center for the surrounding villages.

history

Although no prehistoric , Roman , Visigothic and Moorish finds have been made, the presence of settlers and soldiers in the region is likely. Names such as Alfahmín, Alhamín or Alamín , which are associated with a later castle (Castillo de Alamín) , have survived from the 10th century . In 1085 the area was named by Alfonso VI. recaptured ( reconquista ) , but shortly afterwards threatened again by the Berber Almoravids . It was not until Alfonso VII (reigned 1126–1157) that the La Mancha region finally became Christian around 1130. Since there are no other reports from medieval times, the site may not have been built until the first half of the 15th century, but the granting of city rights (villa) is documented as early as 1486 .

Attractions

  • There is now no trace of the Castillo de Alamín and a nearby bridge.
  • The three-aisled Iglesia del Triunfo de la Santa Cruz dates from the middle of the 18th century and is built in the Mudéjar tradition from broken stone and bricks.
