Location and climate

Tembleque is about 60 km (driving distance) southeast of Toledo and about 95 km south of Madrid at an altitude of about 635  m . The small town of Orgaz, which is well worth seeing , is about 38 km to the west. The climate in winter is harsh, but in summer it is dry and warm; the sparse rain (approx. 420 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter months.

The mechanization of agriculture , which has been increasing since the 1950s, and the abandonment of small farms led to a decline in purchasing power and the emigration of part of the population in the small town as well.

economy

In earlier centuries Templeque was the artisanal and mercantile center of a large number of individual farms and small villages in its agrarian area. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the small town itself.

history

The area around Tembleque essentially shares the history of Toledo: the Romans were followed by the Visigoths ; they were followed in 711 by the Arabs and the Berber tribes allied with them , who after the successful reconquest ( reconquista ) in 1085 passed the area to the Christians under the leadership of the Leonese-Castilian king Alfonso VI. had to resign. The area came under the control of the neighboring town of Consuegra, about 30 km away, until it was ceded in 1183 by Alfonso VIII to the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem (later the Order of Malta ). After the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) against the Moors , which was victorious for the Christian armies , Tembleque was re-established and repopulated ( repoblación ) in 1241 under the leadership of the knights of the order . The importance of Tembleque for agricultural production and its location on one of the many sheep trails in Spain ( cañadas ) led to an upswing, so that the place was granted city rights in 1509.

Attractions

  • The main attraction of Tembleque is the large main square (plaza mayor) in the heart of the city with its loggia houses , which give it the flair of an open-air theater. In the past centuries the square was cordoned off once or several times a year and used for bullfights (corrídas) and other major events (cattle markets, etc.). The town hall (ayuntamiento) with only small balconies was placed in the middle of the row of loggia houses .
  • The church of the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was founded in the 16th century and expanded with chapels in the 18th. The portal shows a profiled garment without set columns and capitals but with an original crown made of tracery . Inside there is a baroque altarpiece .
  • The Casa de las Torres is a listed city palace (palacio) of a wealthy landowning family from the 18th century. The two-storey inner courtyard resembles a cloister.
  • The small hermit church Ermita de Veracruz from the 18th century has an unusual octagonal floor plan. With the exception of the precisely hewn corner stones, its walls are made of rubble stones . The unadorned building is covered on the inside by a dome that does not appear on the outside.
  • The court column (rollo jurisdiccional or picota) was moved from its original location to a centrally located small park in the 19th century.
Surroundings
  • There are two more hermit churches outside the village - the Ermita del Cristo del Valle dates from the 17th century, the Ermita de San Antón from the 19th century.
  • Several traditional windmills can also be seen.

Others

The milk desserts that were developed in Puerto Rico and sprinkled or poured over with cinnamon, desiccated coconut, caramel or jam also have the name tembleques .
