Mascaraque with Juan de Padilla Castle

Mascaraque is a municipality in the province of Toledo in the west of the autonomous region of Castile-La Mancha , Spain .

geography

The municipality is on a plain with a few hills in the center of the province, southeast of the capital. It belongs to the territory of the Mountains of Toledo and it borders the municipal areas of La Guardia in the north, Villamuelas in the northeast, Mora de Toledo in the south-southwest, Orgaz in the southwest and Villaminaya and Almonacid de Toledo in the east.

The 66 km² large municipal area is elongated from north to south and is between 700 and 720 meters above sea level .

The road of Don Quixote "Ruta de Don Quijote" reaches Mascaraque on the way from Toledo to San Clemente. From Mascaraque the path divides into three different routes: one to La Guardia, one to Tembleque and the third towards Consuegra , the latter village is known for its windmills .

history

The place has Islamic roots from the time of the Caliphate of Cordoba . Mascaraque Castle was built in the 14th century and later used as a palace-castle by Juan De Padilla in the 16th century .

During the war of independence, the city archives burned down, which is why little data on the past of the municipality has survived.

In the 19th century, the parish was able to oppose Carlism as it resisted with its own militia, which also served to defend Isabella II . During the invasion of Basilio Garcia's army (1837–1838), Mascaraque was the only municipality in the area that refused to give supplies to the Carlist, which is why the government allowed the town's coat of arms to read: “No TEMIERON” ( "YOU WERE NOT AFRAID") was entered.

Mascaraque had 442 inhabitants in 2019.
