The Mole ( Espion, lève-toi ) is a French agent film from 1982 based on the novel Chance Awakening by George Markstein. The film, which manages with only a few action scenes , keeps the tension going by the fact that the protagonist never really sees through who his opponents are during the entire plot. The action takes place in Zurich and Munich .

action

A Swiss official is shot dead in broad daylight in the tram on the street in Zurich . The act is reminiscent of attacks by terrorists such as the Red Army Faction or the Brigate Rosse .

An opaque federal councilor named Jean-Paul Chance approaches the former spy Sébastien Grenier and pretends to be his commanding officer. He confronts Grenier with alleged contacts of his wife to left-wing extremist circles. Grenier has never heard of it. Little by little, other former agents of a French spy ring are murdered. Grenier has long since withdrawn from this area and has been working as an inconspicuous investment advisor in Switzerland for eight years. He feels threatened and goes in search of the masterminds.

Chance's phone number is just as fake as the office he leads Grenier to. Other dubious people pretend to be members of the French secret service, but Chance denounces them as Soviet agents. It becomes apparent that the terrorist group that is carrying out another attack on another Swiss Federal Council in the middle of Zurich is connected to Chance or another secret service.

Grenier's wife Anna Gretz is suspected together with her students and is temporarily arrested for this attack. Chance turns up at the police station and gets Anna's release. Apparently he has official power and influence. Grenier tries to see through the connections. When he tries to flee Switzerland with his wife, she is kidnapped and later murdered.

While searching for the supposed murderer, he learns of a nightly meeting of his still unknown opponent in the Polybahn ; but here he shoots the wrong person. Through his investigative behavior, he is apparently unsustainable for his own secret service or a mole in the French secret service plays agents against each other in order to have them exposed. While he was watching the funeral of his wife a few days later from a distance, his captors watched him and shot him shortly afterwards. His body is buried on site and discovered by hunters two years later.

criticism

film-dienst 12/1983: “Cleverly constructed agent story from the jungle of the relentless war of opposing secret services; solidly made, but hardly exciting. "
