Juan de Padilla (* 1490 in Toledo , † April 24, 1521 in Villalar (today Villalar de los Comuneros , province of Valladolid ) was one of the leaders of the " Comuneros uprising " against Emperor Charles V , who was also King Charles I of Spain was.

Life

Padilla was born in Toledo into a noble family. Failed to gain royal favor, a feeling of bitterness turned him into captain of the rebel army. The insurgents first thought of the formation of a national government under the leadership of Queen Joanna of Castile, called Joanna the Mad, and captured the castle of Tordesillas where she was imprisoned. The cities of Castile tried to defend their traditional rights against the rising power of the king. The insurgents' extreme demand was for the Cortes to be convened every three years . Because of the distrust of Charles V's Flemish advisers , there was general dissatisfaction, which then contributed to the cruelty of the struggle.

In the summer of 1520, the rebels under Padilla were able to win some victories. The widespread desire to democratize the movement alienated the nobles. After Padilla was ousted, he was called back after the new captain had been defeated. After some military successes, his troops were defeated at Villalar on April 23, 1521 , the leaders either fell in battle or were (like Padilla) executed shortly afterwards . The Spanish nobility initially faced the so-called "Comuneros uprising" with wait and see. But when he took an anti-aristocratic turn, the nobility unanimously sided with the monarchy .
